About the Artist
My work has been sold widely throughout the UK and I have exhibited twice at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. In 2020 I was shortlisted for the Scottish Portrait Awards exhibiting my large watercolour portrait of Donald.
Originally from Suffolk, I moved to Scotland to study at the Glasgow School of Art. I fell in love with the rugged landscapes and the people of Scotland. After thirty years I am still here working as an artist and teaching. My work is very varied ranging from portraits to seascapes, architectural studies to abstract mixed media pieces.
However, I particularly love portraiture as I find people's faces fascinating. No two faces are the same so each portrait is unique and has it's own nuances to capture. When considering commissioning a portrait, it's important that you as the client puts forward your ideas for the work even if you have limited understanding of the painting process. My job as the artist is to make recommendations for the most successful outcome and use my expertise to produce a portrait that reflects the subject and their personality.
Watercolour is my favourite medium to work in. I love the transparency of the paint which allows me to achieve beautiful skin tones as well as to work in a detailed style. Watercolour is one of the most difficult paints to work with as there is little room for correcting mistakes. This challenge has always appealed to me and therefore I have spent years mastering the techniques and learning the capabilities of this fluid medium. I also enjoy drawing, the cornerstone of art, and regularly work in pencil, biro and other dry media. I like to experiment with mixed media and have combined acrylic with biro and embroidery.
